Watermelon Margarita

Summer in a glass, that’s the only way to describe this Watermelon Margarita! Fresh watermelon is blended into a bright, fruity margarita with lime, tequila, and just enough sweetness to balance it all. It’s the kind of drink that disappears fast at a backyard gathering, so you might want to double the batch.

I love a good fruity margarita, and I especially enjoy playing with the balance of sweet and tart. My spicy mango margaritas use a similar approach, blending fresh fruit with lime and tequila, though that one gets an extra kick from chili-infused tequila. This watermelon version keeps things simple and refreshing, which makes it perfect for a hot afternoon.

What I love about this Watermelon Margarita cocktail

  • It’s incredibly refreshing. The combination of fresh watermelon and lime juice makes this cocktail light, fruity, and perfect for hot summer days.
  • It’s easy to make in small or large batches. Whether you’re making two drinks or a full pitcher for a party, this watermelon margarita recipe scales up easily.
  • The sweetness is easy to adjust. You can add or omit the simple syrup depending on how sweet you like your margaritas, giving you full control over the final flavor.
  • It looks as good as it tastes. The natural pink hue from the watermelon makes this a beautiful, eye-catching drink for any gathering.
  • It’s endlessly customizable. From a Tajín rim for a spicy kick to swapping the liqueur, this margarita adapts easily to your taste preferences.

Ingredient Notes

  • Fresh watermelon: Use ripe, sweet watermelon for the best flavor. Seedless watermelon makes blending and straining easier.
  • Simple syrup: Adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the lime. Feel free to omit it if you prefer a lighter, less sweet cocktail.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice gives the best bright, tangy flavor compared to bottled juice.
  • Tequila: Choose a good quality blanco or silver tequila for a clean, crisp flavor that lets the watermelon shine.
  • Triple Sec: This orange liqueur adds a subtle orange flavor and a bit of sweetness. You can also use Cointreau or Grand Marnier. Fresh orange juice works if you don’t have liqueur or prefer to use a non-alcoholic alternative.
  • Ice: Needed both for shaking the cocktail and for serving; use plenty to get the drink properly chilled.
  • Lime wedge, for garnish: A classic finishing touch that adds a pop of color and a bit of extra citrus aroma.
  • Sugar or Tajín, for the rim: Sugar keeps things classically sweet, while Tajín adds a spicy-tangy kick for those who like a little heat with their sweetness.
  • Extra watermelon, for garnish: A small watermelon wedge or cube on the rim makes for a beautiful, fitting garnish.

Variations & Substitutions

  • Make it spicy: Add a slice of jalapeño to the blender with the watermelon, or use Tajín on the rim, for a sweet-and-spicy version.
  • Make it a frozen margarita: Blend the ingredients with ice instead of shaking for a slushy, frozen version of this drink.
  • Try a different fruit: If you prefer, you can give my strawberry margaritas a try!
  • Turn it into a mocktail: Omit the tequila and Triple Sec, and add a splash of sparkling water for a refreshing non-alcoholic version.
  • Swap the liquor: Try using a mezcal instead of tequila for a smokier flavor profile that pairs beautifully with the sweet watermelon.

Tips for the Best Watermelon Margarita

  • Strain the watermelon juice well. Straining removes the pulp, giving you a smoother, more refined cocktail instead of a chunky, fibrous texture.
  • Chill your watermelon before blending. Using cold watermelon straight from the refrigerator helps keep the finished cocktail nice and cold without watering it down with extra ice.
  • Taste and adjust the sweetness before serving a full batch. Watermelon varies in sweetness, so taste your mix after blending and adjust the simple syrup up or down before shaking the full batch.
  • Rim your glasses before you start mixing. Prepping the sugar or Tajín rim ahead of time means your drinks are ready to pour the moment the cocktail is shaken, so nothing gets watered down waiting around.

Serving Suggestions

Watermelon margaritas are perfect for casual summer entertaining! They pair beautifully with a spread of Mexican-inspired appetizers like a bowl of homemade guacamole and some air fryer chicken taquitos!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best type of tequila to use in a watermelon margarita?

A good quality blanco or silver tequila works best for fruity margaritas. Silver tequila has a clean and crisp flavor that lets the fresh fruit shine through. Avoid using a heavily aged tequila, the stronger flavor can compete with the fruit instead of complementing it.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version of watermelon margs?

Yes, simply omit the tequila and Triple Sec and replace them with a splash of orange juice and some sparkling water for a refreshing watermelon mocktail. You’ll still get all the fresh, fruity flavor without the alcohol.

Why does my watermelon margarita taste watery?

This usually happens when the ice melts too much before serving, either from shaking too long or letting the drink sit before pouring. Serve the margaritas immediately after shaking, and make sure your watermelon is well chilled beforehand to help keep the drink cold without excess dilution.
