I’m always here for a good fruity drink, especially when it’s this easy to make! There’s something about blending fresh fruit with water and a little sweetness that seems so easy but we just don’t do it often enough.
And honestly, this is one of those recipes I keep coming back to. It’s quick, refreshing, and feels a little special without requiring much effort at all, which is exactly my kind of situation!

What is agua fresca?
Agua fresca (which translates from Spanish as “fresh water”) is a light, refreshing drink popular throughout Mexico and Latin America. It’s typically made by blending fresh fruit with water, a bit of sugar, and sometimes lime juice, then straining it for a smooth texture.
Unlike smoothies or juices, agua fresca is more diluted, which makes it super hydrating and perfect for warm weather. It’s simple, fresh, and all about letting the natural fruit flavor shine!

- Made with simple ingredients. You only need a few basics: strawberries, water, sugar, and lime. Nothing complicated, just fresh and flavorful.
- Easy to customize! You can adjust the sweetness, add more lime, or even mix in other fruits. It’s very forgiving and flexible.
- Naturally fruity and vibrant. The fresh strawberries give this strawberry agua fresca a beautiful color and bold flavor. It tastes just as good as it looks.
- Great for gatherings. It’s easy to make a big batch and serve in a pitcher. Perfect for casual get-togethers or just keeping on hand!
Ingredient Notes
- Fresh strawberries: Use ripe, sweet strawberries for the best flavor. Keep a few strawberries for garnish, too!
- Granulated sugar: Adds sweetness! Adjust based on how sweet your berries are.
- Water: Helps create that signature light, refreshing texture.
- Lime juice: Brightens everything up and balances the sweetness.
- Lime slices: Optional garnish that adds extra citrus aroma.
- Ice: Essential for serving this nice and cold.

Variations & Substitutions
- Swap strawberries for watermelon, pineapple, or mango for a different flavor.
- Mix strawberries and guava for an amazing flavor combination.
- If fresh strawberries aren’t in season, use frozen strawberries!
- Use honey or agave instead of granulated sugar.
- Add fresh mint for a cool, refreshing twist.
- Skip straining if you prefer a slightly thicker, more pulpy drink.
- Make it sparkling by replacing some of the water with sparkling water just before serving.
- Make a creamy variation by adding condensed milk instead of sugar when blending the ingredients.

Tips for Success
- Use ripe, in-season strawberries. The sweeter your strawberries, the better your agua fresca will taste. This also means you may not need as much added sugar!
- Blend thoroughly before straining. Giving the mixture enough time in the blender helps fully break down the fruit. This makes straining easier and more effective.
- Adjust sweetness after mixing. Once everything is combined, give it a taste and tweak as needed. A little extra sugar or lime juice can make a big difference.
- Serve it very cold! Agua fresca is best enjoyed chilled over plenty of ice. You can also refrigerate it before serving for an extra refreshing drink.
Storage Suggestions
Store your strawberry agua fresca in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 days. Give it a good stir before serving, as natural separation can occur. This drink is best enjoyed fresh, but you can prep it ahead of time and chill until ready to serve.
