Ecuadorian Desserts

Here are a few popular Ecuadorian dessert recipes. In Ecuador, we have such an amazing selection of tropical fruit, that many times a simple piece of fruit, such as a mango, zapote, babaco, guanabana, granadilla, among others, can be a great dessert.

    Dear Laylita,

I’m an Ecuadorean citizen who has lived in the Washington, D.C. area for almost 30 years and just found your website/blog. My wife is American and loves your recipes, One of our favorites is the pan de yuca recipe. Also, the aguado de gallina is “out of this world.” Keep up the hard work!

    Cheers,

    Eduardo.

Hi my grandson is bringing his wife and little girl over to stay with us next year and we would love to be able to make them a meal of their favorite dishes when they get here. Thank you.

    Carmen

    Hi Laylita,

Do you have a recipe for torta de chocolate mojada? My husband is from Quito and I’d love to make this for him for his birthday.

Love your blog! So helpful for this American woman trying to cook for an Ecuadorian man :) I can’t wait for the cookbook to come out!

Hi Emily – Thank you! I’m planning to add more cakes/desserts this year, so will include torta de chocolate mojada on the list of desserts to add.

It depends, are you going to do a mix of queso + something dulce? If you like the contrast of sweet and salty you can use queso fresco. If you prefer a more creamy mild taste then go with cream cheese. And for something different (but delicious) you could also try goat cheese (for some recipes I beat with sugar/honey and vanilla until it’s nice and smooth).

    Dear Laylita,

I am wondering if you have any recipes for a torta de manzana y nuez con caramelo, like they have at Sweet and Coffe in Ecuador. My husband is from Guayaquil and I want to make him this cake for his birthday. It’s impossible to find a recipe online and I was wondering if you had one?

    Muchas Gracias!!!

{Comida típica lojana en el restaurante Mamá Lol {Comida típica lojana en el restaurante Mamá Lola}

Traditional food from my hometown at @mamalolarestaurante in Loja, Ecuador:

1. Horchata lojana - a delicious sweet tea made with a mix of herbs and flowers

2. Salsa de ají de pepa y mayonesa de cilantro - A mildly spicy pumpkin seed salsa and a cilantro mayonnaise served with popcorn (canguil) and hominy corn (mote) as an appetizer

3 & 5. Cecina - a thinly sliced cut of seasoned meat, traditionally pork, but this restaurant also has a variation with chicken. Served with pickled onions (curtido) and boiled yuca.

4. Cuy - Guinea pig, not everyone’s cup of tea, I love the seasoning but find it a bit gamey/overpowering so I usually just have a small taste. My favorite part are the potatoes they served with it

Love the combination of creativity + Ecuadorian flavors of ShamuiCo restaurant in Saraguro - a must stop if you find yourself driving between Cuenca and Loja. We tried the following:

{Morcillas con tortillas de papa} The best blood sausages with potato herb patties

{Langostinos en tempura de coco} Coconut tempura shrimp with ripe plantains

{Cuy relleno con menestra} Guinea pig stuffed with lentils

{Cecina lojana con boloncitos y queso} Thin pork steaks with little plantain dumplings and cheese

{Deditos de pescado con aguacate} Fish sticks with avocado - this description doesn’t sound great, but it was delicious
